Challenge
The kitchen in our client’s 1950s-era rambler had served the family well—hosting daily rituals, meals, and countless conversations—but it was no longer meeting their needs. The layout felt dated, storage was limited, and the finishes didn’t reflect the warmth and character of the rest of the home. The challenge was to reimagine the space while honoring the home’s mid-century roots.
Solution
We took a design approach that blended heritage with modern function. Custom knotty alder cabinets became the heart of the kitchen, their warm tones and visible grain bringing both richness and authenticity. A hand-laid tile backsplash added texture and visual interest, functioning like a piece of art that elevates the space without overwhelming it.
To bring in more light and utility, we added a new window above the sink—one that not only floods the space with natural light but also acts as a passthrough to the backyard patio, making outdoor dining and entertaining effortless. We also pulled design inspiration from the home’s original brick fireplace, echoing its earthy texture along the adjacent dining room walls to create visual continuity between the spaces.
The Results
The result is a seamless integration of old and new: a kitchen that feels deeply rooted in the home’s story while offering the light, warmth, and function the homeowners craved. The flow between the kitchen and dining room is effortless, and the materials create a sense of timelessness—perfect for both quiet mornings and lively family gatherings.
